Constitution

This document provides the guidelines for our organization.

Purpose:


The Catholic Student Association wishes to create a more organized union of Catholic students in the Berry community. This organization shall provide an increasing awareness of the Catholic Church and opportunities for non-Catholics to become educated about Catholicism.

 

Article I: Membership

Section 1: The organization shall be open to any member of the Berry community interested in Catholicism.

 

Article II: Officers

Section 1: The officers of the organization shall be: the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity Chairman, and a Berry College Faculty/Staff Adviser.

Section 2: The term of office for all positions will be for one year. Newly elected officers will assume duties at the end of spring semester.

Section 3: Officers shall be elected by a quorum of the active membership. Elections shall be held during the last two weeks of March each year.

Section 4: Vacancies occuring among offices between annual elections will be filled by nominations and a vote from the floor at the meeting following the vacancy.

Section 5: Any officer may be removed from office due to actions opposed to the purpose of the organization. After the remaining members of the Executive Committee and the general members at large hear the charges brought against an officer, (a three/fifths (3/5) vote of the Executive Committee and a quorum vote of the members at large), the officer shall then be removed from office.

Section 6: It shall be the duty of the President to preside over all meetings of the organization. The President, in collaboration with the Executive Committee, shall appoint all committees and serve as an ex-officio member of all committees. He/she shall also handle all incoming correspondence.

Section 7: It shall be the duty of the Vice President to assume the duties of the President in his/her absence or upon the President's request and to assist the President in ways that are appropriate. The Vice President will serve as interpreter of the constitution and assist the chair of committees if necessary.

Section 8: The Secretary of CSA shall keep the minutes of each meeting and shall keep an accurate list of all CSA members and the names and addresses of all the officers. The Secretary shall have charge of all records of CSA not maintained by the Treasurer and handle all outgoing correspondence.

Section 9: The Treasurer shall have charge of all funds of CSA and keep an accurate record thereof, and shall disburse funds in accordance with the approved budget or special authorization of the Executive Committee, and shall submit periodic reports to the Executive Committee.

Section 10: The job of the Publicity Chairman shall be to create and upkeep a CSA WebPage and scrapbook. He/she shall also be responsible for publicizing CSA events and coordinating the weekly Mass at Berry's Barnwell Chapel.

 

Article III: Committees and Councils

Section 1: All committees such as special programs, shall be established by the President in collaboration with the Executive Committee.

Section 2: All committees listed in this constitution shall be considered permanent committees unless dissolved by proper action.

Section 3: Permanent committees can only be dissolved by a three/fifths (3/5) vote of the Executive Committee. Temporary committees may be dissolved by the President.

Section 4: All committee chairs are to be appointed by the Executive Committee. Committee members are selected according to demand by committee chairs with the approval of the President.

Section 5: Committee chairs or members may be removed only be a three/fifths (3/5) vote of Executive Committee.

Section 6: Vacancies within committees may be filled be any active member when selected by the chair and approved by the President or elected in specified instances by the membership at large.

Section 7: Committee chairs and members are appointed annually by the President and serve for the year or the duration of the committee.

Section 8: The Executive Committee is composed of all officers and the adviser.

Section 9: Each member of the Executive Committee shall have one vote. The President will vote only in the event of a tie.

 

Article IV: Meetings

Section 1: The general membership shall meet at least every two weeks per semester.

Section 2: Committees may meet whenever necessary at the discretion of the chair or by call of the President or Executive Committee.

Section 3: The Executive Committee shall meet at the discretion of the President or upon request from the committee chairs.

 

Article V: Amendments

Section 1: Amendments to the constitution may be suggested by any member of the organization. A suggested amendment must be supported by a majority vote of members present and submitted to the Student Life Council for approval before adoption.
